Cervantes Trophy – Race Report

Saturday 29 April saw the start of RORC’s 2017 Offshore Racing programme, with the first race from Cowes, via marks, to finish in Le Havre (see course).  Spellbinder was entered with the following members sailing: Trevor Nicholls (S), Chris Maughan (W/L), Tony Riley (W/L, Bob Cousins, Allan Wright, Tom Lynch and Warren Ackerley.  With a strong easterly wind we had a great close reach across the channel, but unfortunately due to a poor start – wrong end of line sele cted, resulted in us getting to the A5 buoy (20nm NW of Le Havre finish) later than most of our fleet.  We arrived at A5 just after midnight with just 20 nm to go – so about 3 hrs, just as the wind veered to SE – and what was the bearing to the finish?  SE – so we spent the remaining 6 hours tacking to the finish line, to cross the line at 05:55:16. As a result we came 24th in our class (IRC4) out of 32 entrants. So it was off to bed for a few hours to catch up some sleep then off to Le Havre Yacht club for a beer and some moules frites for lunch.

Next race is 13 – 14 May, the De Guingand Bowl with Tony Riley as skipper.  There are still two crew places on this race, so if you fancy coming along then please contact Tony Riley or Chris Maughan.   Even if you haven’t raced before, I am sure you will find the experience one of great fun and comradery and there is nothing like racing for honing your sailing skills.
